Wanaka Field Guide: Our Favourite Spots and Where to Park Overnight
Nestled beside crystal-clear Lake Wānaka in New Zealand’s Central Otago region, Wānaka is a place where breathtaking alpine landscapes meet relaxed lakeside charm. It’s not just a stopover—it’s a destination worth pausing for.

Great hikes and walks
Wanaka’s beauty is evident the moment you drive into town. Centred on the lake aptly named Wanaka, it’s clear that there’s plenty of room to swim, hike, and stretch your legs with abandon. Mountain biking is big here, so be sure to check out any local outfitters for rentals if that’s what you’re into. As far as hikes and walks go, these are a few of our favourites.
If you’re looking for a challenge to stretch your legs, head to the Raspberry Creek car park to tackle the Roy Boy track. A 10km return journey, you’ll enjoy snowfields, glaciers, sheer rock cliffs, and waterfalls on this stunning hike.
If you’d rather a mellower walk, try the Upper Clutha River Track, which is 18.5km return, but easy to pick up sections at a time. You can meander along the river and even find places to pop in for a swim if the weather’s nice enough!
The Blue Pools Track is a 3km return walk. Marked as an easy track, it features swing bridges and views of the Makarora River flowing fast and deep. This makes for bright blue pools, inviting visitors to marvel for a while.
If you’d prefer another mountain summit—and have the time—we suggest checking out Isthmus Peak, a 5-7 hour tramp up the mountain, with unrivaled views of Lake Wānaka and Lake Hawea. It’s a great alternative to the popular (but oft overrun) Roy’s Peak.
For a gentle uphill stroll, hit Mt Iron. An easy 4.5km loop with sweeping views of Lake Wānaka.
Our favourite eats and drinks
Wanaka’s a hot spot for adventure—whether you’re hiking, swimming in the lake, mountain biking, or skiing, there’s plenty to do. Even better, when you’re ready to bask in the glory of all your active pursuits or just need to fill the belly, Wanaka delivers with delicious food and drink, too. Here are some of our favourites.
Brunch + lunch: Scroggin is located right near the heat of the city, making it easily accessible. With a delightful large array of breakfast favourites, salads, and pastries, you might want to stock up for afternoon snacks. Their drinks menu goes beyond coffee—smoothies, juices, beers, and natural wines. Catering to many dietary restrictions, they’re a great place to stop (possibly more than once).
On-the-go lunch:Burrito Craft is a food truck that serves up delicious burritos, tacos, and sides. They’re located on Brownston Street among other food trucks, so it’s easy to stock up on food that’ll please everyone.
Beers: Wanaka’s beer scene has taken off, giving you options for your afternoon pint in the sun. Rhyme and Reason serves up brewed-on-site drops from their 14 taps, while Ground Up is just a short walk away with many experimental taps. Another local favourite, b.effect, serves up epic brews in an airy setting, alongside non-alcoholic kombuchas that’ll make you forget all about the beer.
Dinner: For a spot near the lake and a buzzy vibe, head to Kai Kikokiko for classic pub food. If you’re celebrating something special or just want a chance to taste beautifully prepared (mostly) local food, check out Muttonbird.
If you don’t have any activities planned and just want to go to hang out, we recommend giving yourself two days here to soak it all in.
The weather can be harsh in all seasons. Summer brings the brutal Otago sun that make many exposed walks unbearable, so be sure to pack a hat, sunscreen, and plenty of water. In winter, the dramatic hiking and skiing landscapes are prone to rockfall, avalanches, and snow, so check the weather or head to a local i-Site for up-to-date track information.
Winters in Wanaka are cold but there’s plenty to do. Head to Treble Cone for skiing and snowboarding, or try out snowshoeing or cross-country skiing at Snow Farm in Cardrona.
Wanaka is more than a waypoint—it’s an experience. Whether you’re after thrilling alpine adventures, peaceful lakeside escapes, or the charm of a genuine small town nestled against dramatic scenery, Wanaka delivers. Let this destination inspire you rather than dictate a schedule—because sometimes the best trips are those that unfold naturally, right where you find yourself.
